Momotaro's Story and Synopsis
Once upon a time, there lived a grandfather and a grandmother in a village. Grandpa went to the mountains to cut bush bushes and grandma went to the river to wash clothes.
An old woman was washing her clothes in the river when a large peach washed up. The grandmother took the peach home and cut it open with her grandfather, and a healthy baby boy came out from inside.
They were surprised, but delighted, and named the child "Momotaro" and raised him.
Momotaro grew up quickly and became a fine young man. One day, Momotaro learned that ogres had appeared in the village and were tormenting the villagers, so he decided to exterminate them.
The grandmother made kibidango (sweet red bean dumplings) for Momotaro.
Momotaro met a dog, a monkey, and a pheasant on his journey. They gave Momotaro kibidango (dumplings) and became his friends, heading for Onigashima Island.
Upon arriving at Onigashima, Momotaro and his friends joined forces to defeat the ogres. They defeated the ogre's head and brought back treasures to the village. Momotaro and his friends were welcomed by the villagers, and peaceful days returned.
In this way, Momotaro came to be spoken of as a hero.
